The end result is a flood of pumped out shit. The problem with that is that it makes game development a speed competition rather than something done out of passion and a desire to express ideas. Game Jams are near universally with a 48 hours only or some other stupid, tiny time constraint for the entire development. Even if there is a rule against releasing a game that you have been working on for a long time, the time given is at least a month or so from when contests are entered. First of all, there is no set theme or genre, and second of all, from what I could find, there is no time constraint on the total development time, just a submission deadline.
